Local agency gives unique art
experience to Carter and MacRae
Elementary School Students
Big
Brothers Big Sisters of Lancaster County and the Infantree Gallery
collaborate to display student photographs First Friday, May 2, 2008, 5-9
p.m.
For the last six weeks, Timothy Hoover, owner of the
Infantree gallery, and Carrie Keagy, an independent photographer have been
working with Carter and MacRae Elementary 2nd-5th graders who take part in
the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS)
After-School Program. Tim,
Carrie, and Jonalyn Denlinger, the caseworker for Big Brothers Big Sisters at
Carter and MacRae, met together in the fall to talk about some of their hopes
and dreams of creative collaboration in Lancaster City. Each came with different ideas—for
cultivating art, creating a unique opportunity for children in BBBS
After-School programs, and new ways to build community in Lancaster
city. That night they laid out the
dream that
is now “Big Brothers Big Sisters Photoworks”, an art show featuring photographs
taken by
Carter & MacRae Elementary students.
The show will take place at the Infantree Gallery,
21 North Prince Street, 4th floor, on First Friday, May 2, 2008 from 5-9 pm.
The project has
given an opportunity for the “Littles” to be exposed to the art of
photography, use
one time use and professional cameras, and ultimately be “professional
artists” and have their artwork displayed at the Infantree Gallery. They and their “Bigs” have had this
opportunity to get
to know each other in a very special way—creating art and experiencing the
creative process together. Big Sister
Vanessa andher Little Brother Tyhim have been matched for two years and have
always loved the program and what it has to offer. Both seemed to further
blossom in this project, laughing together, exploring a variety of
perspectives and shots for photographs, and enjoying a unique activity at the
After-School Program. Big Sister
Vanessa says of the project,
“I love photography, so sharing one of
my personal interests
with Tyhim was a lot of fun for
me.” Featured photographs of the
students, chosen by the students will be displayed. The
gallery show will provide food, drink, fun, and a unique experience for the
community to
receive the gift of art from local elementary school students. For more information contact: jdenlinger@bbbslancaster.org
